Yesterday we paid off our Visa card & requested to have the account shut down. Not such exciting stuff on the surface, but in reality it's a great achievement! We were cycling through $1000+ each month on the Visa, paying fees, paying interest. Every month we'd pay off the Visa & then run short & clock it up again. This time we've bitten the bullet & asked to close it. It still appears on my internet banking so I wonder how long it will take for them to finish processing its closure. The phone call yesterday took a good 5+ minutes of David trying to convince them that we really did want to close it - he even had to ask me again for confirmation that that is what we really want to do when they offered to permanently reduce the interest rate to 14%pa.!!!
And then today I received my brand spanking new gold Visa DEBIT card in the mail. That's the way we're going. And due to David's income we qualify for gold customers & get no fees for any atms, internet banking, phone banking, etc & the monthly account keeping fee is waived also. :D Win win really. Funny how I found this info out by my own investigation instead of our Personal Banker contacting us to organise it. So now, all we have left to pay off is $1500 for the girls' bedroom furniture, oh & the house itself!! rofl. But things are definitely starting to look better. All the budget work I've been doing is starting to pay off, and the extra days David did last month definitely helped.
