King Colter

In my internet travels, I frequent a forum called Essential Baby (EB). This is Australia's largest parenting website I believe. EB is an oracle on which you can have just about ANY question answered, and is a window into some ordinary and extraordinary experiences.

For the past few months, I have been following the story of a little boy called Colter and his struggle for survival.

Colter was born in December 2005. He was a normal baby, and a normal pregnancy as far as I know. His birth was where it all went wrong. He was too big & got stuck without oxygen for a long time and as a result suffered extensive brain damage and had now swallow reflex. He was not expected to survive for hours, or days. Christmas came & went and his parents fought hard to have him come home and spend as much time with his family as fate would allow him as it was just a matter of time before his little life would end. He was almost 6 months old when he died, and had been allowed to spend days, and sometimes nights too, at home. His mother, Katrina, is a truly amazing woman - her strength and compassion has been... ...well words fail me. I'm just in awe of her. I truly feel priveleged to have been a passenger along parts of their private journey with their little boy.

The girls in the scrapping section of EB has got together to organise a little card album for Colter, and I've contributed to it too. Here's what I made tonight.
